In the words of the famous Ricky Bobby, "If you're not first you're last". For moms this is the absolute truth. Make yourself a priority.
Often we are juggling so many things at once, that if one falls, we feel as if the whole lot will coming crashing down. However, we must be mindful that one missed appointment, event, does not a complete "hot mess" make. Sometimes dropping that one ball can be a blessing, it lets you breath a bit because there are fewer balls in the air. Honestly, we could all stand to let a few things drop, just remember not to drop the important ones: family, friends, health, and most importantly YOU! So what if Timmy misses little league practice this week, or John's shirts didn't get picked up from the cleaners, it's not the end of the world.
I am definitely not advocating shirking any responsibilities or reneging on any commitments, but sometimes you need to excuse yourself from an activity. You don't have to be everywhere, doing everything for EVERY event; that is the quickest way to burn yourself out, put stress on your health, and your family.
This year has been rough for lots of people, for lots of different reasons. Unfortunately when times get hard we usually put our own needs on the back burner and this only adds insult to injury. As a daughter/wife/mom/sister/friend/mentor if I don't take of myself, then the people that need me don't get the best I have to give. Admittedly I have let myself go, but I now realize (even more than ever) that I must make time to take care of myself.
The million dollar question though "how do I go about "making time", especially when I'm already booked to the hilt?". Well you have to be very "gung ho" about it, and have a "do or die" attitude; as in "If I don't do this, I will die". In all seriousness death is a consequence of not taking care of yourself, so setting aside time for yourself should be an absolute priority. I understand you already get up at the crack of dawn to get the kids ready for and off to school, then you have your own work, and errands and then the afternoon is here and kids activities and meals...whoa, where did the day go? It went as usual.
Let's take a step back and think about you. As a matter of fact let's start our day thinking about ourselves, in a positive, not vain way of course. Let's begin by giving thanks, right when you wake up (5 minutes earlier). Five minutes alone before anyone can ask for anything "Thanks that I am alive and able to serve those who need me, thanks for my health which will get better because I promise to make myself a priority, thanks for time to myself to clear my mind and start afresh." These few moments in the morning are your foundation, make it a priority so it will be strong. As the day progresses, steal a moment here and there. Lunch time is a great time for a quick workout. Packing a nice healthy meal and snacks is also a way to add time (because you aren't waiting for people to prepare food and bring it out), it can also be healthier. When you're with the kids for activities, find a way to get in a bit of activity yourself, it also makes for great family fun. You could take a walk around the park while Timmy is practicing, (he surely doesn't need you looking over his shoulder). Instead of watching t.v. as a family, read or play games together (uh mental dexterity is important too!). Family dinners are great, just make sure that they're healthy (lifetime eating habits start early, but they can change), we always want to model healthy behaviors.
All the little moments you snatch throughout the day add up, and you'll see changes in your attitude and health if you stick with them. And those around you will see the changes too. You owe it to yourself to make the time to have a better you. Just remember Ricky Bobby and you'll be okay.
